35 Japanese Fonts and Japanese-Inspired Designs
These 35 Japanese fonts and Japanese-inspired designs serve two different tasks: setting Japanese text, and giving Latin-letter headlines a decorative style. A font that looks Japanese in an English preview may not contain the hiragana, katakana or kanji your project needs.
For Japanese text, start by comparing Murecho’s sans-serif family, Sawarabi Mincho’s serif design and Zen Kaku Gothic. Dela Gothic One provides a much heavier display option. For decorative Latin lettering, La Oriental and Nuku Nuku have smaller character sets. Exoplanetaria includes katakana and a limited kanji set, so it needs a closer coverage check.
Choose by character coverage, then licence
- Paste your actual names, sentences, punctuation and numerals into the font’s specimen. Check for missing glyphs and unwanted fallback fonts.
- Match the role to the design: body copy, a short heading, a logo or interface labels. A preview headline alone does not establish readability in long text.
- Read the licence for the particular download. Free, personal-use, open-source and paid fonts are different offers; a listing on a font directory is not a blanket commercial licence.
- Check web or app embedding separately for proprietary fonts. Open-font licences also carry conditions when font files are redistributed or modified.
The notes below are based on publisher descriptions and licence pages, not installation or typesetting tests. This update checks seven entries in detail; the remaining previews are retained for further comparison and their exact coverage and permissions still need checking.
Commercial License for Japanese Fonts

When using any font for paid projects, confirm that you have the appropriate commercial rights. Using non-commercial fonts can lead to legal complications.
To avoid this, CSS Author recommends that you purchase a license or use a service like Envato or MyFonts and check the selected font’s licence for your intended use.
By purchasing your font license , you not only support font creators but may also provide our team with royalties, helping us continue our work.

Murecho is a Japanese Gothic sans-serif family by Positype, with hiragana, katakana and JOYO+ kanji coverage. It also supports Latin, Cyrillic and Greek, and offers nine weights plus a variable font. Its repository specifies SIL Open Font License 1.1, making it an open-font starting point for mixed-script text.
La Oriental Font

The La Oriental distributor page lists one Regular OTF style with 335 characters and a 1001Fonts Free For Commercial Use licence. Sawarabi Mincho is a Japanese serif font by mshio. The repository describes hiragana, katakana and 3,297 kanji glyphs in this version, with SIL Open Font License 1.1. Compare it for serif text or headings, while checking your exact wording because its kanji set is not unlimited.
Zen Fonts Kaku Gothic

The Zen Kaku Gothic repository describes two Japanese sans-serif families: N, with a simpler contemporary treatment, and A, with a more classical letterform approach. The included licence is SIL Open Font License 1.1. Check which family and weight you download; the linked repository is archived, which does not by itself withdraw its existing font licence.

Dela Gothic One Font

Dela Gothic One is a heavy, wide Gothic display font. Its creator lists Latin characters, hiragana, katakana and kanji through JIS Level 3, and explicitly permits hobby and commercial use under SIL Open Font License 1.1. Compare it for a short, prominent heading rather than assuming a display preview demonstrates body-text readability.
